Newcastle has a very distinct identity and its people have a stronger personality than any other big English town. They have a warmth and an un-English liveliness and are known as "Geordies" throughout the country. Much of this strength comes from a pride in their industrial heritage. At one time a quarter of all the worlds shipbuilding took place here. Its most recognisable landmark is the Tyne Bridge with its curving arch of steel rising to 170 feet, which served as a model for the similar-shaped but larger Sydney Harbour Bridge. With the decline of its industry came a long period of deprivation for the town. However, extensive investment and restoration has reversed its fortunes and Newcastle can now boast a thriving arts scene and some of the liveliest nightlife. Chief among these changes has been the rejuvenation of The Quays along the banks of The Tyne river, now lined with stylish hotels, designer bars, restaurants and public art.. The Millennium Bridge opens and closes like the blinking of an eye and is a work of art in itself and links the two towns of Newcastle and Gateshead. The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art stands in an enormously impressive converted mill, but the real eye-catcher is The Sage, a curving, glass structure housing a concert hall, studios and workshops all dedicated to music in all its forms. All of which provides one of the most instantly recognisable skylines in Europe. The surrounding country is also full of places to visit, including the Beamish outdoor museum, Washington Old Hall (George Washington's ancestral seat) and the Metro Centre, which is claimed to be Europe's largest indoor shopping centre. But the most famous of all is Hadrian's Wall, which was built by the Romans as protection from the fiery Scots across the border.
